Starting a new habit is always intimidating because you so badly want to make it a habit, but your old habits are hard to break. One way to make it easier to start a new habit is to really look forward to at least one aspect of it. For yoga, having a defined yoga space that evokes peace and tranquility will make you more likely to get on your mat. If your space is a cluttered mess, you won't want to be there. So how do you make a space dedicated to yoga without breaking the bank? Utilize what you already have and ask for extras as gifts. Here are 4 steps to create a yoga space that you'll love enough to want to return to.
1. Envision What You Want
Before you start setting up your yoga space, think about what you like in a room that feels calming. Some people like bright natural light while others like it dark. Some people like it dark but with fairy lights, a salt lamp, or candles. What comes to mind when you picture a relaxing yoga class? Do you like indoor plants? Do you want photos of loved ones on the wall, or do you prefer inspiring messages and quotes? Maybe a mixture? Dream up exactly what you would want if space and money weren't limiting you. By thinking of your ideal yoga space, you can pick aspects of it that are easy to implement now. You can always work towards those other ideal aspects over time, but this will give you a starting place.
2. Pick a Location
Based on whether you like bright natural light or an area that is darker, come up with a few locations in your home (or out in your yard/patio) that have the right amount of light for you. You don't need a ton of space...just enough to roll out your yoga mat, lay down with your arms and legs extended, and stand up tall with your arms reaching way over your head. I know people who practice yoga in their kitchen or next to their bed because that is what works best for them and their home. If you aren't sure what is best for you, test out a few locations before you pick your primary yoga space. It's great if it can be a dedicated yoga space, but sometimes that is just not possible and so you'll simply have to unroll your mat for every class and roll it back up when you're done. Pick a spot that you're the most likely to return to.
3. Clean it Up
Remove any extra clutter that you can, dust and clean all the surfaces nearby, and clean the floors (sweep and mop or vacuum). A dirty area will make you avoid being there, and even if you get yourself on your mat you'll be distracted by the mess and thinking of all the cleaning you have to do. Give your brain less to think about by cleaning ahead of time so that you can fully relax on your mat. Once you do this once, you only have to spend a few moments from time to time to keep it clean and clutter-free.
4. Add Some Extra Touches
This is the fun part! Add some of those fun extra touches that you had pictured in your ideal yoga space. Start with what you already have at home. Make it smell nice by lighting a candle or by diffusing essential oils. If you want to add some soft glow, light more candles or hang up some white Christmas lights that you have in storage. Are you practicing yoga so that you can be more present with your kids, spouse, or other loved ones? Put some pictures of them around for inspiration. Consider adding some plants to further increase relaxation and to help purify the indoor air. These are all just suggestions so don't feel the need to do them all! And if you hate all of these ideas, don't do them! Do whatever you want to your space to make it inviting to you. No need to do it how everyone else is doing it. You should, however, put your yoga mat in your space or at least roll it up and store it nearby for easy access.
No matter how big/small your space is or how decorated it is, it should be clean and welcoming to you. Start out simple and make changes over time. Try yoga outside when the weather is nice! All you really need is space for your mat, or even just a bed to do yoga on. Wherever your space is, make it so you want to be there!
